What You Should Know: One of just 66 examples of MB&F’s HM5 in zirconium, the present watch takes its inspiration from the wedge-shaped supercars and unconventional watch design of the 1970s. Rather than displaying the time conventionally, jumping hours and trailing minutes are projected horizontally through a reflective sapphire prism with an integrated magnifying lens, allowing the watch to be read while driving, without turning the wrist. Even the louvres across the case are functional, opening to admit light onto the luminous display beneath. Presented here in excellent condition, the HM5 remains one of the most playful—and mechanically inventive—expressions of MB&F’s early Horological Machines.
