What You Should Know: Introduced in 1992, Chaumet’s Les Pléiades is a wonderfully unconventional interpretation of the jumping-hour watch, combining a sculptural 36mm white gold “disco volante” case with twin apertures displaying jumping hours and minutes. Chaumet commissioned François-Paul Journe to develop the movement for the watch, based on an ETA 2892-2 and extensively modified for its unusual display, at a time when Journe was still working behind the scenes for established maisons. With its polished, almost jewellery-like case and playful digital-inspired timekeeping, the present example captures a particularly inventive moment in Journe’s early career, long before the F.P. Journe name became synonymous with independent watchmaking.
