Introduced in 2009, it has become one of the most recognisable creations of independent watchmaking, combining François-Paul Journe's distinctive design language with an unusually bold choice of materials. While its deceptively simple appearance might suggest otherwise, the Chronomètre Bleu is anything but conventional, pairing a tantalum case with one of the most captivating blue dials in modern horology. The dial is undoubtedly the star of the show. Its extraordinary depth and shifting shades of electric blue are achieved through a demanding finishing process, producing a mirror-like surface that changes dramatically with the light. The 39mm case is crafted from tantalum, a dense, highly corrosion-resistant metal notoriously difficult to machine and rarely encountered in fine watchmaking. Its distinctive dark grey hue provides a beautiful contrast to the vivid dial, while the asymmetrically positioned subsidiary seconds and elegant Arabic numerals lend the watch its unmistakable F.P. Journe character. Turning the watch over reveals the manually wound calibre 1304, constructed in 18-carat rose gold and featuring two parallel mainspring barrels for a power reserve of approximately 56 hours. Beautifully finished and unmistakably Journe in its architecture, the movement is a reminder that the Chronomètre Bleu's appeal extends well beyond its celebrated dial. Dating to 2013 and accompanied by its original presentation box and certificate of authenticity, the present example captures everything that has made this model one of the most sought-after creations of contemporary independent watchmaking.
