What you should know: Few contemporary independent watchmakers have developed a design language as immediately recognisable as De Bethune. Founded in 2002 by Denis Flageollet and David Zanetta, the manufacture has built its reputation on an extraordinary combination of technical innovation, exceptional finishing and a distinctly futuristic aesthetic. The DB28 Kind of Blue Tourbillon brings these qualities together in spectacular fashion, with its striking monochromatic blue appearance achieved through the thermal oxidation of titanium rather than conventional surface treatments. The watch takes its name from De Bethune's celebrated Kind of Blue series, with its heat-blued titanium case, floating lugs and architectural dial creating an almost otherworldly appearance. At its centre sits the manufacture's high-frequency, ultra-light tourbillon, completing a full rotation every 30 seconds, twice the speed of a conventional one-minute tourbillon. Powered by the manually wound calibre DB2019, the movement also incorporates De Bethune's proprietary balance and balance spring technologies, while a power reserve indicator is discreetly positioned on the reverse. Produced in a highly exclusive series of just five examples with a milky way pattern on the dial, the present watch was released in 2020. This DB28 Kind of Blue Tourbillon represents one of the most visually compelling expressions of De Bethune's philosophy, where cutting-edge mechanical innovation and an unmistakable artistic identity come together in a creation that could scarcely be mistaken for anything else.
