What You Should Know: Kari Voutilainen's watches are celebrated for their extraordinary attention to detail, combining traditional watchmaking techniques with an unmistakable aesthetic of their own. The present Vingt-8 “Jumbo”, created as a unique piece in 2015, takes this philosophy a step further. Housed in a generously proportioned 44.5mm white gold case, it belongs to a small group of Voutilainen creations fitted with the exceptionally rare calibre 32 made following this special order. The cal. 32 is a larger interpretation of his celebrated calibre 28, made specifically for larger cases, of which Voutilainen made a very small batch after this piece unique. The beautifully executed greyish-blue dial is a particular highlight, with its intricate guilloché decoration complemented by subtle orange accents that introduce a playful touch to an otherwise classical composition. Turning the watch over reveals another unusual feature: a bespoke hinged hunter caseback, allowing the owner to choose when to admire the movement beneath. The inside of the cover is itself decorated with enamel, adding an unexpected layer of craftsmanship to a watch already rich in detail. Hidden beneath the cover is one of the finest expressions of contemporary traditional watchmaking. The manually wound calibre 32 incorporates Voutilainen's celebrated double direct impulse escapement, with two escape wheels delivering energy directly to the balance. Its beautifully arranged bridges, polished bevels and meticulous hand-finishing make the movement every bit as captivating as the dial. Accompanied by its original presentation box and certificate of authenticity, this unique Vingt-8 Jumbo is a particularly compelling example of Voutilainen's artistry, bringing together a rare movement, an exceptional dial and a wonderfully personal approach to case design.
