Lot Details

What You Should Know: An ingenious creation from Zurich-based independent watchmaker Paul Gerber, the Retro Twin Ref. 158 reflects the mechanical inventiveness for which he has long been celebrated. Gerber is perhaps best known for his contribution to the Superbia Humanitatis, a remarkable wristwatch comprising 1,116 components that earned a Guinness World Record in 2005 as the world's most complicated wristwatch. His own creations demonstrate the same fascination with mechanical ingenuity, often concealing highly original constructions beneath elegantly restrained exteriors. Crafted in white gold, the present example features a beautifully proportioned 35.6mm case with a classical, stepped profile. Beneath its understated exterior lies Gerber's calibre 15, based on the manually wound Peseux 7001 and extensively reworked to incorporate his patented automatic winding system. Visible through the sapphire caseback, two synchronised platinum rotors follow overlapping paths without ever colliding, offering a fascinating mechanical spectacle. Equally captivating is the retrograde seconds indication, which instantly returns to zero every 60 seconds, alongside an unusual dynamic power reserve display incorporating a moving register. Together, these features lend the watch an engaging and distinctly playful character. Limited to just 20 examples across the different precious metal configurations, the present white gold watch is numbered 17 and dates to 2006. Accompanied by its original Paul Gerber presentation box and certificate of authenticity, this rare Retro Twin represents an opportunity to acquire a particularly inventive creation from one of Switzerland's most accomplished independent watchmakers, combining traditional elegance with an exceptional display of mechanical originality.
