Extra non-exotic leather strap What You Should Know: Founded in 1834, Charles Frodsham is the longest continuously trading firm of chronometer makers in the world, although it was not until 2018 that the independent manufacturer introduced its first wristwatch, following sixteen years of development. Combining traditional English watchmaking with modern engineering, the Double Impulse Chronometer became the first wristwatch to incorporate a highly detached oil-free double impulse escapement. Its movement features a large free-sprung balance, a self-compensating balance spring with raised terminal curve, and a proprietary shock protection system. The present example, London hallmarked and delivered in 2023, is the first of just three watches thus far constructed in white gold with Roman numerals and cyphers. The heat-blued numerals and hands contrast elegantly with the white ceramic dial, while the distinctive double cyphers draw inspiration from historic Charles Frodsham pocket watches. Their design and generous proportions occupy the dial beautifully, lending the watch a distinctly traditional English character. Further distinguishing this example is its commemorative hallmark depicting the profile of King Charles III, introduced in 2023 to mark the King's Coronation. Available as an optional hallmark to jewellers and watchmakers that year, it provides an additional historical detail particularly appropriate to a British watchmaker with nearly two centuries of history. The Double Impulse Chronometer is notable for the extent of its in-house production, with Charles Frodsham manufacturing virtually every component, including the case and ceramic dial. Only the crystals, springs, jewels and strap are sourced externally, with the jewels drawn from the firm's existing stock. With only a small number of watches completed each year and a waiting list extending to a decade, examples rarely become available. The present watch, distinguished by its white gold case, uncommon Roman numeral and cypher configuration, and commemorative hallmark, offers an opportunity to acquire a particularly rare variation of this important contemporary British wristwatch. In their own words: “Our goal is the perfect marriage of form and function, without compromise to either. Drawing upon a rich cultural and scientific heritage and the production of fine chronometers, watches, regulators and clocks for nearly two centuries, the Double Impulse Chronometer wristwatch combines precision timekeeping with an understated English aesthetic.” Charles Frodsham & Co., London
