Lot Details

This extremely rare white gold example with a black dial is among the most sought-after versions of the groundbreaking DBS — an extremely important model that introduced several of De Bethune’s signature design elements, including the crown at 12 o’clock, spherical moon phase at 6 o'clock, and an articulated lug that would go on to inspire the brand’s now-iconic floating lug system. In Their Own Words: "The DBS was unveiled during the very first edition of Only Watch in 2005, two years after David and I promised His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Monaco that we would create it. We committed to designing and offering a piece that was as surprising as it was exceptional for the first charity auction benefiting the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies (AMM). When we launched the DBS in 2005, it marked a turning point for De Bethune. This watch inaugurated a new horseshoe-shaped case, conceived to give the movement both harmony and balance. It also presented features that would become synonymous with De Bethune, including the position of the crown at 12 o'clock, the position of the spherical moon phase at six o'clock, and new Breguet-inspired hands. The delta-shaped bridge, decorated with our own Côtes de Bethune, reflects my fascination with architectural forms and their ability to express mechanical beauty. An articulated lug surrounding the crown secures the upper attachment of the strap inside the case, ensuring an optimal fit on the wrist despite its substantial 43 mm diameter. This innovation was the origin of De Bethune’s signature floating lugs and illustrates our constant pursuit of ideal comfort. Since 2005, De Bethune has created nine different versions of the DBS. This particular version, in white gold with a black dial, is among the rarest DBS models ever made, making it especially coveted by collectors. For me, the DBS represents the very essence of De Bethune." - Denis Flageollet, co-founder and Master Watchmaker of De Bethune
