Lot Details
This white gold Perpetual Secular Calendar by Svend Andersen is one of the rare examples housed in a case made by legendary case maker Jean-Pierre Hagmann, whose initials are proudly engraved between the lugs of the case. Fewer than 30 pieces ever produced, even less with the case maker’s initials. In Their Own Words: “In 1996, I created the Perpetuel Secular Calendar, the first wristwatch fully programmed to follow the Gregorian calendar’s 400-year cycle, calibrated all the way to the year 2400. Unlike a traditional perpetual calendar, which will incorrectly display February 29th in the years 2100, 2200, and 2300, this mechanism automatically suppresses those leap days—while correctly retaining February 29th in the year 2400. To achieve this, I developed a unique gear system: a leap-year cam advancing every four years, paired with a reduction wheel that engages a 50-tooth secular wheel completing a full revolution only once every 400 years. This makes the watch accurate for centuries without adjustment. On the dial side, simplicity reigns: hours, minutes, seconds, and a discreet date aperture. The complexity is revealed on the reverse, where three subdials track the months, the leap-year cycle, and the grand 400-year secular cycle. The platinum case introduces for the first time the “triangle” lugs that are soldered. It is made by Jean-Pierre Hagmann who manufactured almost all Secular Perpetual calendar. No more than 30 secular perpetual calendar have been produced (the number on the dial corresponds to the number of the movement). It remains one of only three wristwatches capable of keeping perfect time with the Gregorian calendar.” - Svend Andersen, Founder and Master Watchmaker of Andersen Genève
